What the British shooting press say

"I Can See Clearly Now..."

Colin McKelvie, Gun Mart April 2005

"Finally, and at the risk of re-stating the blindingly obvious for the umpteenth time, you can't identify your target or take a safe shot at it unless you can see it.  And the more clearly you can see it the better, for all kinds of good reasons.  The riflescope is the aiming system of choice for all but a tiny handful of UK riflemen today, but when it comes to tackling live quarry, we all spend many hours peering through binoculars or spotting scopes in comparison with the few seconds we spend aiming with the riflescope.  The most consistently successful stalkers and pest shooters are those who spend the greatest amount of time studying their quarry, its habits, and its habitats, not just on shooting outings, but at every possible opportunity, and at all times of the year.

Good binoculars - and the emphasis must be on GOOD - are about the best investment you can make.  To a good rifleman they become as familiar and indispensable as a stethoscope to a doctor.  Magnification alone is not enough, because it is lens quality and the quality of resolution - i.e. image clarity and precision - that really matter.  Anything more than 10x magnification is likely to be impossible to hold steadily without a firm support, and even 6x with fine resolution and good light-gathering power is infinitely better than a fuzzy, dim, dancing image from a pair of cheap 12x binos.

I field-tested a Shepherd 8x42 unit costing £630 alongside a Zeiss 8x42 BTFL (about £775), a Swarovski 8.5x42 EL (around £860), and a Leica 8x42 BR (approx. £856).  Using the intricate, multi-coloured pattern of a dry-stone wall at exactly 150 yards distance as a test of resolution, the Zeiss unit was only marginally inferior to the other three, which all yielded indistinguishably good, crisp, colour-perfect images in everything from bright sunshine to misty conditions and finally deep dusk.  With nothing to choose as regards image quality, I then looked carefully at weights, robustness of construction and cost prices.

The Shepherd, weighing exactly 1 1/2 lbs, equalled the Leica in build strength, but was almost 1/2lb lighter.  Half-pounds matter when they hang around your neck all day long.  The Swarovski, though of similar weight to the Shepherd, has two hinging points, which may make it more vulnerable to snagging on twigs and suchlike, and perhaps more susceptible to having the two monocular tubes knocked out of alignment if they are dropped or hit hard.  But the long sold hinge of the Shepherd appears incredibly robust. The unit balances nicely. and has the typical central focusing wheel with an incremental click-type dioptre adjustment for the right eyepiece.

Although, by normal calculations, all the 8x42 binos ought to have an exit pupil diameter of just a whisker over 5mm, my micrometer revealed an e.p. measuring just under 6mm, which means the delivery of more light to the user's eyes, which is important in gloomy conditions.  My only piffling criticism was the Shepherd's shiny, rather "platicy" carrying pouch - but what serious user keeps binoculars in a pouch except when travelling.

All in all, with a stunning combination of image quality and durable construction, and costing £145 less than the next cheapest of the four makes tested, I could only come to the firm conclusion that the Shepherd offers quite the best performance and value for money. "

"Shepherd's Magna-Pod Is A Handy Shooting Rest"

Guns Magazine November 1999 by Clair Rees

The Shepherd Magna-Pod provides a sturdy, stable rest for rifles, cameras or spotting scopes. It consists of an adjustable telescoping post that screws into a rubber-padded magnetic base. This base snugs firmly against the hood, top or even the side of a car or truck.

The top of the post accepts an adjustable pan head for mounting a camera or spotting' scope. It also accommodates a padded U-shaped rifle rest. A triangular polymer base adapts the Magna-Pod for shooting bench use.

I tried the Magna-Pod during a recent rimfire shooting session and was impressed. The magnetic base firmly adheres to any metal surface and leaves no marks. It can be instantly deployed or removed, and offers a rock-solid rest. This device would have been handy for the Nevada rockchuck and ground squirrel hunt I recently attended. A Ruger 1O/22T target rifle equipped with a Shepherd scope, and the Magna-Pod shooting rest would have made a great combination.

Magna-Pod

The name Shepherd is synonymous with optical innovation. The company thrives on creating new concepts and designs. Shepherd's Magna-Pod is a revolutionary spotting scope, binocular, camera, or rifle rest tripod. We've been using it for two seasons as a spotting scope mount in the field and on the range.

Why revolutionary? Well, the base is actually two bases. The visible base is an equilateral triangle measuring 12 1/2" on a side and made from polymer. At each of the three corners is a rubber foot. The tripod effect created by this triangular base makes a highly stable platform, ideally suited to holding your spotting scope on flat surfaces such as a shooting bench.

By removing a steel plate on the underside of the base, the main mount with a 4" diameter magnetic foot attached is released. The rubber-padded magnetized mount can then be secured firmly to any metallic part of your hunting vehicle -- hoods being the most obvious. It's the fastest and handiest spotting scope mount we have ever used, and we've spent many hours gazing through Shepherd's clear 15-40x spotting scope over the hoods of our trucks while scouting and hunting.

The tripod head is a standard, threaded camera mount offering vertical, horizontal and angular adjustments. The new models of the Magna-Pod are fitted with a fast-adjusting ball head, and true to their reputation for quality service, Shepherd is sending current owners of the Magna-Pod the new ball head without charge. Pop off the tripod head on either model, and Shepherd has provided a "U" shaped rifle rest unit that replaces it.

The Magna-Pod is typical Shepherd --innovative, functional and designed by hunters for hunters. Retail price is $129.
